Fair-trade organic beans from CENFROCAFE in the Cajamarca region of Peru. Hints of toffee, cocoa and dried fruits; sweet and tart with a smooth mouth feel.
Our Peruvian beans are sourced from family owned farms organized around Central Fronteriza del Norte de Cafetaleros (CENFROCAFE), a cooperative started in 1999 which supports over 80 organizations and over 2,000 coffee producers in the lush Cajamarca region of Peru. CENFROCAFE is one of the largest and most organized cooperatives in Peru, supporting the commercial endeavors of its members and aiding in the development of their communities as a whole. They provide financing to help farmers during harvest & production, as well as training aimed at improving coffee quality & yields to increase farmer earnings. Programs are in place to increase production by providing organic fertilizers to farmers and to monitoring plant health on the farms, which is very important with the prevalence of coffee-leaf rust in recent years.
CENFROCAFE as a group produces about 13,225 tons of coffee each year, which makes it one of the leading cooperatives in the country in terms of volume. The members’ average production per hectare is about 2.5 tons, which is relatively high for organic coffees. The co-op is also one of the top exporters in Peru, a country otherwise known for its more commercial-grade coffees. The group’s coffees have regularly placed at the top in national competitions, producing solid performing full-container lots as well as having the potential for producing exceptional microlots as individual farmers focus more on varieties and processes.
